How Cyclists See Toronto

If you had to guess which city would be nicer to ride your bike in, would you choose Toronto, Ontario, Canada or Dallas, Texas, USA?

I'm thinking that most people who don't know either city would guess Toronto. Canadians are usually so well mannered, right? Right?

Here's a post from one Texas cyclist who didn't really enjoy Toronto's downtown cycling scene. I think it should be seen as a wake-up call to anyone who thinks Toronto is doing OK when it comes to cycling...

Second Class in Toronto

I would encourage Torontonians to respond to that post as they see fit... I'm looking forward to seeing their comments on it.

He's correct, in the opinion of this multi-city resident: Montreal five years, Tokyo five years, Toronto ten years. Toronto is the worst of the three I know well. He didn't even get to the part about Igor Kenk (multi-year bike theft for crack ring-leader) or Mayor Rob Ford (link SSFW).

You have to ride like a SMART courier in Toronto. Not reckless or selfish, because you'll hurt yourself or someone else, but decisive and aggressive. (Link NSFW)

Ἀντισθένης - thanks for that note and for adding me to your blogroll. I'm going to do the same... your blog is nice and crabby. I like it. Plus tons of bikeness.

I never would have thought that! I've been reading articles about couriers in Toronto and everything has been about the sense of community and support that the bicyclists of the city provide for each other. I guess like anywhere its important to be smart and aware.
